Intruder Alert: How to Solve the Case When We Have the Clues

by: Marcus Sylvas & Dr. Garrett Wheat

The culture of a workplace determines more than you may think it does.  In this session, you will learn about workplace culture and the effects it has on employees.  You will also learn about what you can do as a leader to facilitate a great workplace culture.

Marcus Sylvas is a young professional who has developed a passion for training and development.  He has over 7 years of state service and is currently the Leadership Development Program Manager at the Louisiana Transportation Research Center.  Marcus holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Southern University, where he was president of their SHRM chapter.  In 2021, he received a Master of Science degree from the School of Leadership and Human Resources development at Louisiana State University and passed the SHRM-CP certification.  He is currently working on his PhD in Leadership and hopes to travel once he finishes in 2024.

Garrett Wheat is the Statewide Strategic Program Manager for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and recently earned his PhD in Agricultural and Extension Education and Evaluation through LSU.  His dissertation included creating a competency model for Highway Safety Engineers in State DOTs.  He previously taught Computer Science in High School for five years before moving to the DOTD to develop and teach courses for the Leadership Development Program.  Having been with the department for 7 years, his new role allows him to work on special projects while continuing the groundwork set from his dissertation research.  He loves all things technology, is fairly new to the golf world while trying to break 90, and a self-proclaimed local expert on roundabouts.  He and his wife have two boys (4 and <1) who are extremely fun, caring, and share an interest in watching Bluey.
